KUCHING: The Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) is collaborating with the Kuching Fitness Association and Spartan Race Malaysia to organise the Spartan Community Workout that will help obstacle racers here prepare for the Spartan Race Sarawak next month.

The Spartan Community Workout is divided into two challenges – the 300 Burpees Challenge and Stadium Challenge – and will be he held at two different venues.

Saradise Kuching will host the 300 Burpees Challenge on Sept 29 while the Stadium Challenge will take place at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium in Petra Jaya on Oct 6.

“The workouts are open to anyone 12 years of age or older and any fitness level,” MSNS director Dr Ong Kong Swee said at the press conference at Saradise Innovation Space yesterday.

“They are designed to allow Spartan racers to train with fellow Spartans, get fit and learn useful tips on how to conquer the obstacles with the Spartan community,” he added.

Ong, who is also Sarawak Sports Corporation chief executive officer, was representing the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports (MTACYS) Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He also assured that the facilities at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium would be ready for the second stage of challenge.

Meanwhile, event organising chairman Carter Wei said the Spartan Community Workout served as a prelude to the inaugural Spartan Race Sarawak which will take place on Oct 19-20.

“The workouts will be led by Spartan certified SGX (Spartan Group Training) trainers from CrossFit Kuching, the only gym that has Spartan certified SGX trainers in Sarawak,” he said.

The organiser is targeting the participation of 300 people and Wei is confident that it is achievable considering the big Spartan community in Sarawak.

“Those interested can register at [email protected] and we also accept walk-in registrations.

“For those who want to join the Spartan Race Sarawak, tickets can still be purchased at www.spartanrace.my,” he added.

Also present were MTACYS sports unit head Zul Yusop, Kuching Fitness Association vice president Gordon Chung and CrossFit Kuching official Allan Bungan Begoi.
