Midin, what's that?

Pronounced as “mee deen”, midin is a green jungle fern that grows locally in Sarawak. It is a wild creeper red fern (Stenochlaena palustris) that grows naturally in secondary forests and is unique to the state.

Its tender new fronds are widely eaten as a vegetable, famous for its crispy texture and great taste.  Midin is also an excellent source of iron, fiber, potassium, omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants.  Moreover, Midin is pesticide free, fertilizer free and wild grown.

Midin as an agricultural crop

Midin being a jungle produce, supply is currently unsteady.  Shifting its planting and producing on a commercial basis can ensure a steady supply of this delicacy.

One acre of land has the potential to produce up tp 10 kg of midin daily with one worker.  A combination of watering system for consistent water supply and use of organic fertilizer will ensure high quality produce.

With great support through research from Sarawak’s Department of Agriculture, packing technology and methodology has been trialled and tested. It ensures the freshness of Midin, keeping the “crunchiness” and deep green color while extending its shelf life up to 7 days, enabling Carus Flora to embark on export exploration.
